Sonelgaz is finalizing contracts with 19 firms, for development of 20 photovoltaic solar power plants in Algeria. These projects are part of Algeria’s ambitious renewable energy agenda, with the goal of generating 15,000 megawatts of solar electricity.
The firms sourced from both national and international, will be tasked with construction of 1000MW and 2000MW projects. The 2000MW project involves building 15 solar power plants across 12 provinces, while the Solar 1000MW project includes five plants across five provinces. Each plant has varying capacities, ranging from 50 to 300MW and the ultimate aim is to integrate 15,000 MW of solar power into the national electricity mix.

Sustainable development
Algerian firms will oversee 42% of project executions and the projected timeframe for completion of both initiatives is 22 months. Some plants are expected to begin operations gradually within the current year. The projects are expected to surpass the initially set 35% integration rate
Algeria will entirely fund the projects. There’s potential for additional financing through public-private partnerships and foreign direct investment. The projects are expected to surpass the initially set 35% integration rate. Significant natural gas savings, potentially six to eight billion cubic meters annually, are anticipated upon completion.
Algeria’s concerted efforts in expanding solar energy reflect a commitment to sustainable development and a desire to play a prominent role in the global renewable energy arena. The country acknowledges its lag in solar energy development compared to global trends. However, there’s optimism that current endeavors will bridge this gap and position Algeria as a key player in renewable energy.
