South Sudan launches 20MW solar energy plant

South Sudan has inaugurated a 20MW solar energy plant. Developed and funded internally by Ezra Construction and Development Group Ltd., a subsidiary of the Ezra Group, this landmark project is a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions in the country.

The power plant complemented by a 14 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), integrates advanced Huawei components, including smart inverters, smart transformers (STTs), and smart loggers, which optimize efficiency and sustainability. These technologies ensure that the solar plant operates at peak performance, providing a dependable and scalable energy solution.

The 20MW solar facility is designed to supply power to approximately 16,000 households in Juba, significantly decreasing energy prices and improving grid stability. The BESS component enhances this system by storing energy from the solar plant, ensuring on-demand power availability and overall grid reliability.

Energy distribution

The project’s success was made possible through strategic collaboration with the South Sudan Electricity Corporation (SSEC) and the Ministry of Energy and Dams, which play a pivotal role in overseeing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. The Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO), a public-private partnership between Ezra Group and SSEC, serves as the primary distributor of electricity in Juba. JEDCO now receives bulk energy from Ezra Construction & Development Group, ensuring efficient and equitable energy distribution.

Currently, the solar plant contributes 19% of JEDCO’s total energy distribution, supplementing existing thermal power plants. However, for sustained energy reliability and long-term growth, additional renewable sources, such as the government-operated Nisitu Solar Plant, will be vital in supporting South Sudan’s energy mix.

“Our success would not have been possible without the vision and leadership of the Ministry of Energy and Dams. This project represents more than just infrastructure; it symbolizes a shared commitment to a cleaner and more prosperous future,” Natnael Ghebrengus Ezra, Chief Operations Officer of Ezra Group.
