Tanzania has entered into a Triangular Development Partnership (TriDEP) with the United States, India, to develop renewable energy in Tanzania.
This initiative aims to enhance India’s development cooperation footprint in support of mutual aims in the Indo-Pacific and beyond, focusing on three core areas: disaster risk reduction, climate-smart agriculture, and renewable energy.
The Asia Foundation, as the implementing partner, will concentrate on supporting a reliable grid system and fostering a policy and regulatory framework conducive to renewable energy development.

The launch event saw the participation of over 60 representatives from various sectors, including government, utilities, regulators, the private sector, and academia. Key officials presiding over the event included acting USAID Mission Director Alexander Klaits, Charge de Affair Manoj Verma from the Indian High Commission to Tanzania, and Permanent Secretary Felchesmi Mramba from Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy.
Officials emphasized TriDEP’s potential to build capacity, create business opportunities, and support the growth of Tanzania’s energy sector. They highlighted the importance of exchanging best practices in renewable energy and grid management, leveraging India’s achievements in solar and wind power.
In the first phase, TriDEP will work with India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Grid India over the next six months to organize workshops, webinars, and in-country visits. These activities will culminate in customized capacity development sessions in India, where best practices and expertise in modernized grid management and renewable energy will be shared.
