In his February 2021 State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that several new post-apartheid cities are being conceptualized across the country. Ushering in the development of smart cities; several industries are planning for the reality of smart cities and smart homes.

With the urbanization of cities across the country, water management is vital to recycle and manage this scarce resource. Many real estate developers are becoming conscious of incorporating technology with improved methods of water management. Residents of gated communities are aware that efficient water management not only ensures a continuous supply of water but also minimizes the wastage of it.

Residents in gated communities prefer to use smart prepaid water meters to manage their water usage. This comes with several benefits, namely, residents can properly manage their spending water usage and can also properly budget for future usage.
