The government of Tunisia represented by the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy, has sealed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ACWA Power towards the development of green hydrogen production in Tunisia.
This project is aligned with Tunisia’s National Strategy for the Development of Green Hydrogen and its Derivatives, launched in October 2023, which aims to export more than 6 million tonnes of green hydrogen to Europe by 2050.

Implementation
The development will be executed in three phases, with the first phase including: Installation of 4GW of renewable energy units, 2GW of electrolyzer capacity, and battery storage facilities, producing 200,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen.
The green hydrogen will be exported via the South2 Corridor, a hydrogen pipeline initiative connecting Tunisia to Italy, Austria, and Germany, recognized as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Union (EU). Expected benefits include economic growth, job creation, and significant contributions to Europe’s decarbonization targets.
Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power highlighted the project’s potential to serve as a bridge between Tunisia and Europe, emphasizing the role of ACWA Power’s expertise in renewables, desalination, and green hydrogen in advancing the decarbonization goals. Ouael Chouchene, Secretary of State for Energy Transition also expressed confidence in the partnership, underscoring the alignment with Tunisia’s green hydrogen strategy and the country’s strengths.
“We are confident that this agreement with ACWA Power will leverage Tunisia’s strengths, including its strategic geographic location, existing infrastructure, and skilled workforce, to create a more sustainable future for the country,” said Ouael Chouchene.
