Tunisia has announced plans to set up a wastewater treatment plant in Sousse. The move aims to address the growing sanitation needs driven by population growth and increased demand.
The plans will be implemented by the country’s National Sanitation Office (ONAS) in partnership with Indian company Va Tech Wabag. This facility, strategically located near the Hamdoun River will be, worth approximately US $37M. It will financially backed by the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the European Union (EU).

Benefits
The plant will have a capacity of 36,000 cubic meters per day and is scheduled for completion in 24 months. After commissioning, Va Tech Wabag, in collaboration with the Tunisian company Gloulou Mohamed et Salem (EGMS), will operate and maintain the plant for 12 months. This collaboration emphasizes the importance of enhancing effluent management to protect freshwater sources in Sousse, which are currently threatened by pollution from agricultural and industrial activities.
The contract award comes amid several other planned initiatives by ONAS, including the renovation of eight existing wastewater treatment plants, supported by a $1.2 million grant from the EIB. This series of projects underscores Tunisia’s commitment to improving its liquid sanitation infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
