Uganda has launched a tender to develop solar systems for water production. The country’s Ministry of Water and the Environment initiated the launch with an objective of improving energy efficiency of water supply installations, allowing them to operate even during power outages.
The call is divided into four lots, and interested companies or independent power producers (IPPs) can submit their applications until January 17, 2024. The selected company will be responsible for supplying, installing, and commissioning the 40 solar photovoltaic systems.

Objectives
The systems will be deployed in 40 different localities across the country. The solar systems will be implemented in batches of 10 in different towns and areas. The first batch includes towns such as Kiwenda, Kikyusa, Bamunanika, Banda, Ssekanyonyi, Mayanga, Kayunga, Buyende-2, Kagulu, and Kasambira.
Subsequent batches will cover additional towns like Kyamukonda, Biiso, Ulepi, Inde, Kuru, Lefori, Ayiilo, Adilang, Pallabek-Kal, Olilim, Kasanje, Kyamulibwa, Kakyanga, Nabigasa-Lyabugumu, Ntungu, Isingiro TC, Rubaya, Kabura, Katuna, Nyakashaka-Rubingo, Kyanvuma, Kyere, Kamod, Mkongoro, Abim-I, Losilang-1, Karenga, Iriri, Alakas, and Nakapiripirit.
The initiative aims to enhance the energy efficiency of water supply systems. The use of solar power will ensure continued operation during power cuts. Additionally, the project contributes to extending access to electricity in households and communities through clean energy.
This project aligns with the global trend of integrating renewable energy sources to improve infrastructure resilience and reduce environmental impact. It also reflects Uganda’s commitment to expanding access to electricity and promoting sustainable practices in water supply systems.
