The Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for the construction of two desalination plants in two Southern localities of Namibia is set to take place after five companies submitted bids to the tender.
Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) the state-owned company that distributes drinking water in Namibia said that the two stations are pilot projects for groundwater desalination in Namibia.
The two localities lie in the southern arid area of Namibia where vegetation and access to fresh drinking water are scarce. The locations of Bethanie and Grünau are therefore being used as a test site for the project.
The government of Namibia, Desert Research Foundation of Namibia and NamWater are investing in desalination to provide fresh water to the residents of the two towns.
The five companies vying to conduct the Environmental Impact Assessments include: Environmental Compliance Consulting, D&P Engineers & Environmental Consultants, African Planning Forum, KPM Environmental Consulting and Matrix Consulting Services.
All the five companies applied for both desalination plants, save for African Planning Forum, which applied only for the Bethany desalination plant.
NamWater has indicated its commitment in communicating on the two stations, as the bidders look forward to a verdict in a few weeks.
A call for tenders and design for the construction of the two plants will be launched in September 2019.
