AMEA Power awarded two BESS projects in South Africa

United Arab Emirates-based renewable energy developer AMEA Power has secured two major Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in South Africa, further solidifying its presence in the country’s energy sector.

The Gainfar and Boitekong projects, each with a capacity exceeding 300 MW, are set to play a critical role in enhancing South Africa’s energy security. The Gainfar project will be connected to the Ngwedi substation, and the Boitekong project to the Marang substation.

Both projects were awarded in Bid Window 2 of South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. Each project will deliver over 300MW-hours of capacity to the national grid, addressing load shedding and frequent blackouts.

These systems will provide backup power, stabilize the grid, and support the integration of renewable energy. Power will be delivered through 15-year power purchase agreements with Eskom, South Africa’s public electricity utility. The projects will enhance Eskom’s grid reliability and support the country’s energy transition.

In 2022, AMEA Power secured the 120 MW Doornhoek Solar Project under Bid Window 6 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme. With the Gainfar and Boitekong projects, AMEA Power further establishes itself as a key player in South Africa’s renewable energy landscape.

“This achievement marks a major milestone for AMEA Power, as we continue to expand our footprint in South Africa, a key market for us. These projects represent our first successful awards of BESS projects through a competitive bidding process and underscore our commitment to providing sustainable, resilient and cost-effective energy solutions. We are proud to support South Africa’s energy transition, enhance Eskom’s grid reliability and drive economic growth in the region,” said AMEA Power chairman Hussain Al Nowais.
