Egypt has introduced the National Clean Hydrogen Program to support the country’s shift toward a competitive green hydrogen industry. The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), working with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), launched the program which is intended to improve Egypt’s ability to draw investment into green hydrogen by advancing project preparation, strengthening regulatory and policy frameworks, and building institutional expertise across the sector.
As part of its activities, the initiative will carry out pre-feasibility and feasibility assessments for selected hydrogen projects, while also offering technical assistance and policy support. A major element of the program is the creation of a Green Hydrogen Center of Excellence at SCZONE’s headquarters in Ain Sokhna, which will promote research, innovation, and knowledge-sharing.

Global Clean Hydrogen Program
This effort forms part of the broader Global Clean Hydrogen Program, led by UNIDO and financed by the Global Environment Facility. The multi-country initiative spans 10 nations, with Egypt identified as a strategic participant. Delivery of the program will be managed through a collaborative framework involving both local and international stakeholders focused on energy transition and industrial development.
A steering committee has been set up to guide implementation, bringing together SCZONE, UNIDO, and key government institutions, including the Ministry of Environment Egypt, Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy Egypt, and Ministry of Industry Egypt. The committee will coordinate closely with Egypt’s Supreme Council for Green Hydrogen to ensure the initiative aligns with national energy strategies and is effectively implemented.
