Kenya is set to develop a sewerage system in the town of Iten in Elgeyo-Marakwet County in bid to strengthen sanitation services.
The North Rift Water Works Development Authority (NRWWA) Director General Edwin Rotich confirmed the plans and said the project is part of the Kenya’s of increasing the rate of access to sanitation in the East African country to 40% by the end of 2022, compared to 20% currently, according to the Kenyan Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation.

Scope of work
The project will feature new pipes that will drain wastewater in the town of Iten. The sewerage system, the size of which is not yet known, will channel wastewater (from households, grey water, etc.) to a new treatment plant with a capacity of 6,800 m3 per day.
NRWWA will finance the work on the Iten sewerage system to the tune of US $7.7M (about Ksh 900M). The agency, which falls under the Kenyan Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, is responsible for undertaking the development, maintenance and management of waterworks in four counties in the Rift Valley region. These are Turkana, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. Following the presentation of the Iten sanitation project, Director General Rotich also announced similar projects in Kapcherop and Kapsowar.
“Feasibility studies are planned before the possible construction of sewage systems in these Kenyan towns,” he said.
