Pan-African renewable energy developer Axian Energy has partnered with Sika Capital to roll out a major solar initiative in Benin that will see the construction of four solar power plants across the country.

The project, valued at US $42.7M, is designed to add 50 MWac of installed capacity to Benin’s grid. Once completed, the plants will collectively generate enough electricity to meet the needs of around 50,000 households, directly advancing the country’s target of sourcing 30% of its energy mix from renewables by 2030.

Access to reliable electricity

According to the partners, the scheme has secured US $41M in financing from two development finance institutions, underscoring strong investor confidence in Benin’s renewable energy potential. The solar facilities will be developed in Bohicon, Parakou, Djougou and Natitingou, strategically chosen to expand access to reliable electricity in both urban and regional areas.

Axian Energy CEO Benjamin Memmi described the initiative as a “decisive milestone” for Benin’s clean energy journey, while Sika Capital Chairman Tchegnon Amoussou noted that the project marks the country’s first independent power producer (IPP) venture based on renewables.

The announcement comes after five years of groundwork with government authorities, local leaders, and host communities. Once operational, the solar plants are expected to strengthen energy resilience, attract further infrastructure investment, and contribute to Benin’s wider transition to sustainable power.
