Burkina Faso’s state-owned power utility, Sonabel, has announced that it has completed the process of selecting contractors for the Koudougou solar power project. The move signals tangible progress on a project that has been in development for several years.
Koudougou solar power project is a 20MW photovoltaic facility to be built near Koudougou and will supply electricity directly to the national grid. Sonabel will retain ownership of the facility and purchase the output, in line with the government’s strategy to strengthen domestic power generation and limit reliance on electricity imports and fuel-based power plants.

Meeting energy demands
Koudougou has long been earmarked as a strategic site for solar development, but previous procurement efforts were slowed by challenges related to project design and the broader operating environment. The completion of contractor selection indicates that the project is moving from preparation toward implementation, although details on engineering, procurement and construction responsibilities have yet to be confirmed.
Solar generation has become an increasingly important component of Burkina Faso’s electricity system, following the rollout of large photovoltaic projects such as Zagtouli and Nagréongo. These facilities have helped reduce generation costs and enhance grid stability.
Once operational, the Koudougou plant is expected to add new low-cost capacity to meet rising electricity demand. Sonabel is expected to provide further updates once contract negotiations are finalised, including information on project financing, construction scheduling and the contractors involved
