The construction of a new water reservoir in Togo, Kara region has now been completed and commissioned by the Togolese authorities. The infrastructure will come in handy to the residents as it will supply water to up to 300,000 people including small-scale farmers who will now be able to do their farming easily and get immense produce.
The reservoir cost a whopping US$ 108m of which 77 percent was provided by the Government of Togo and the rest by the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the West African Development Bank (BOAD) – who are both partners in the project.
The launched project is among 10 water reservoirs that will be built for the Agricultural Processing Centres (CTA), as part of the Togolese Agropoles. This is as a result of water scarcity in the recent past where residents lacked clean drinking water and also undermined the security of the agricultural sector especially during the dry seasons.

Construction of water towers equipped with modular reservoirs
Additionally, water towers equipped with modular reservoirs are currently being constructed by the Togolese Water Company (TDE) in eight localities in the region which will be used for the storage and distribution of clean drinking water. The localities include; Niamtougou, Baga, Défalé, Kanté, Kara, Kémérida, Bassar and Guérin-Kouka.
The water towers are quite big with a storage capacity ranging from 50 to 300 m³ and have a lifespan of more than 25 years. The cost of this mega project to strengthen drinking water production in Kara is estimated at around US$ 1.6m.
This initiative is also part of Togo’s plan to achieve the sixth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for universal and equitable access to drinking water at an affordable cost by 2030.
