DAI, Siemens Energy partner to develop green ammonia project in Egypt

DAI Infrastruktur and Siemens Energy have announced a partnership to develop a green ammonia project in Egypt.

The collaboration follows a previously signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The project in East Port Said, Egypt, known as “Ra,” is an exciting initiative aimed at producing green hydrogen and green ammonia from renewable power sources.

Siemens Energy will provide electrolyzers, auxiliary plant systems, and essential equipment for the hydrogen production process. Additionally, the two companies will work together on engineering services during the project’s development.

The project, Ra, is planned to have a total production capacity of 2 million tons per annum (mtpa) of green ammonia. This represents a significant capacity for the production of environmentally friendly ammonia.

The green ammonia produced is intended to be sold to German and primarily European customers, including the maritime sector. Green ammonia is expected to serve as a clean fuel source for ships. DAI Infrastruktur has already secured agreements with UK-based Freepan Holdings and Greek Naftomar Shipping and Trading for the purchase of green ammonia from the Ra project. This indicates a commitment from buyers to source green ammonia for their operations.

The project’s strategic location in East Port Said, Egypt, near the Suez Canal and the harbor, is expected to facilitate bunkering services for vessels powered by green ammonia. This location makes it convenient for maritime industry players to refuel their vessels and transport green ammonia to European markets.

The project is part of Egypt’s broader efforts to position itself as a regional hub for the production of green fuels. It is one of several projects for which MoUs were signed with Egyptian authorities last year, signaling the country’s commitment to sustainable and clean energy solutions.
