Eco Wave Power Global AB, a leading onshore wave energy developer, has officially entered the African renewable energy market through a new agreement with Africa Great Future Development Ltd (AGFDL).

The agreement sets the stage for a feasibility study to assess the viability of a wave energy power station at the Port of Ngqura, located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. This marks Eco Wave Power’s first project on the continent and aligns with its strategy to expand into coastal regions with high renewable energy potential.

South Africa, facing severe electricity shortages and relying on coal for over 80% of its power, is seen as a key market for clean energy innovation. With over 2,800 km of coastline, the country holds strong potential for wave energy deployment.

Favorable location

The Port of Ngqura, adjacent to the Coega Special Economic Zone, the largest SEZ in Southern Africa offers ideal conditions for such a project due to its breakwater infrastructure and direct ocean access.

AGFDL CEO Wilfred Emmanuel-Gottlieb emphasized the importance of the collaboration for Africa’s clean energy future, while Chairman Alphonsus Ukah highlighted its long-term impact on communities and industries in need of reliable power.

Eco Wave Power already operates a wave energy station in Israel and is preparing to launch another in Los Angeles in partnership with Shell Marine Renewable Energy. Other initiatives are underway in Portugal, Taiwan, and India.

“This feasibility study is a meaningful step toward sustainable energy access in Africa. We’re committed to showcasing wave energy’s scalability and role in addressing global energy challenges,” said Eco Wave Power CEO Inna Braverman.

The project reflects Eco Wave Power’s broader goal of commercializing wave energy and supporting a global shift toward cleaner, more sustainable power sources
