Egypt to develop Jabal el Zeit wind megaproject

Egypt is set to construct the Jabal el Zeit wind megaproject. This follows a deal inked between Acwa Power with Egypt’s New and Renewable Energy Authority over which includes a 25-year agreement for the development of a 1.1GW wind energy initiative.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of key government officials, including the Prime Minister of Egypt and the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy. This highlights the collaboration between the private sector (Acwa Power consortium) and the government in advancing renewable energy goals.

Features

The wind farm is planned to be built across the Gulf of Suez and Jabal Al-Zeit regions in Egypt. This strategic location likely takes advantage of favorable wind conditions in these areas. The wind farm will feature some of the tallest wind turbines ever built, exceeding 220 meters in height. These turbines are designed to generate significant power, capable of supplying electricity to approximately 1.08 million homes.

During the development phase, Acwa Power’s consortium that includes construction group Hassan Allam, will conduct site studies and work on securing project financing. The project is set to be implemented at an investment cost of US $1.5bn. Upon completion, the wind energy project aims to contribute to the reduction of regional carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It is projected to cut emissions by 2.4 million tonnes annually, emphasizing its role in promoting cleaner and more sustainable energy practices.
