Kenya plans on a 1000MW wind farm project

Kenya  plans to develop a 1,000MW wind farm, which would become the largest such facility in Africa. The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) made revealed the report and said they plan to finance 75% of the project costs through debt finance and cover the remaining 25% through equity.

These initiatives demonstrate Kenya’s commitment to clean energy and addressing climate change, with the aim of becoming a leader in renewable energy generation on the African continent. The wind farm will be located in the northwestern county of Marsabit, near the existing Lake Turkana Wind Power Ltd. park, which is currently the largest wind plant in Africa with a capacity of 310MW.

Vision 2030

KenGen aims to connect the wind farm to the national grid by 2028 and will be implemented in phases.  According to feasibility studies conducted by French development agency, Agence Française de Développement, developing the project in phases is based on the increase in demand capacity and grid security requirements.

While the 1,000 MW wind farm in Kenya is significant, there is a proposed 10GW wind project in Egypt valued at US $10bn that could potentially surpass Kenya’s project in scale once completed. Kenya is already heavily reliant on renewable energy sources, with about 92% of its electricity generation capacity coming from sources like hydroelectric dams and geothermal power. The country has ambitious goals to increase its renewable energy capacity to 100% by 2030.
