Sasol breaks ground water supply system project in Mozambique

Sasol has initiated the construction of a new water supply infrastructure Mozambique. The project is part of Sasol’s Local Development Agreements (LDAs), aims to improve access to clean and safe drinking water for the local community.

The ground-breaking event, which officially launched the construction, was attended by local authorities, including Govuro District Administrator Fernando Doda Muzobingua. The project will be located in the Govuro district of Inhambane province and will be executed in two main stages.

The first phase involves the erection of a support structure with elevated water storage tanks and a basic distribution network. Phase two works includes the installation of a 20-kilometre pipeline that will link local boreholes to the main water system, ensuring a steady and reliable water supply for residents.

Benefits

Once completed, the system will serve three neighbourhoods, providing approximately 500 household connections along with 10 public standpipes. Govuro District Administrator Fernando Doda Muzobingua. emphasized the importance of the project, stating that access to water is foundational to both public health and socio-economic development.

Ovídio Rodolfo, Sasol’s General Manager in Mozambique, highlighted the company’s continued investment in community well-being, underscoring the importance of long-term, sustainable solutions in addressing essential needs like water access.

This initiative adds to several other water-related projects Sasol has supported in Govuro and Inhassoro districts, including similar systems in Chimedje, Pande Sede, Colonga, and Chipongo. Under the Water and Sanitation component of the LDAs, Sasol is investing about USD 5 million to expand water access and ensure that all communities can obtain safe water within a 30-minute walking distance.
