Sonatrach, Hecate Energy partner on renewable, hydrogen energy in Algeria

Algerian state-owned oil company Sonatrach and the Hecate Energy Global Renewables (HGR Energy) have announced a partnership on renewable and hydrogen energy sectors in Algeria.

The inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to demonstrate their commitment to exploring sustainable energy solutions while aligning with Algeria’s national strategy for renewable energy development.

MoU deal

Under the deal, a feasibility study will be carried out to explore the possibilities of setting up a renewable energy production project in the country with a focus on leveraging HGR Energy’s expertise in this field. As the partnership progresses, the evaluation of green hydrogen production projects will further contribute to Algeria’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

This collaboration not only showcases SONATRACH’s dedication to reducing hydrocarbon consumption and greenhouse gas emissions but also underscores its role as a key player in Algeria’s renewable energy journey. By embracing renewable energy solutions, SONATRACH aims to meet the energy needs of its facilities while promoting responsible and sustainable practices.

Algeria currently generates a relatively small amount of its electricity (e.g., three percent or 686 MW annually), from renewable sources, including solar (448 MW), hydro (228 MW), and wind (10 MW).

Algeria aims to produce 27% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2035, mostly from solar power. To reignite the country’s energy transition, in 2021, the Algerian government made a new push to develop strategic partnerships in the field of renewable energies with multiple countries, including China, Germany, and the United States.  More specifically, the government seeks to forge relationships with foreign suppliers in engineering services, storage systems, solar-tracking technologies, universal certification solutions, and solar application kits for agriculture.
