The government of Uganda has inaugurated a new power station in Mbale city. The ceremony which was led by State Minister Sidronius Okaasai Opolot marks a crucial step in addressing the persistent issue of power blackouts in the Eastern region.
The project was developed by UMEME at a cost of US $837, 711. It involved construction of the substation at Mbale Industrial Park, along with the replacement of old infrastructure. Minister Opolot’s emphasis on the various factors contributing to the frequent blackouts, such as aging poles, vandalism, inadequate power supply, and equipment issues, underscores the comprehensive approach taken to address these challenges.

Direct power line
The establishment of direct, independent power lines to key locations like Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, Kumi, Mbale City, Karamoja, Mbale Industrial Park, Sebi, and others is a strategic move to ensure reliable power supply to essential facilities and areas.
The integration of digital and manual control from the substation at Mbale Industrial Park further enhances the management and stability of the power distribution network. Sarah Wasagali Kanabi’s confidence in a significant reduction in power blackouts for the people in the Eastern region is a positive outlook, highlighting the potential impact of this initiative on improving the overall electricity supply.
This development not only addresses the immediate challenges but also lays the groundwork for sustained and reliable power distribution in the Eastern region.The Minister said it a commendable effort towards ensuring a more resilient and efficient energy infrastructure for the benefit of the local communities.
