UNICEF and the Baxter International Foundation have partnered to set up a three-year water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiative in Egypt.
The initiative aims to make a significant impact in five governorates of Upper Egypt—Aswan, Assiut, Qena, Minya, and Luxor. The initiative is worth a substantial investment of US $2.5M. It will address pressing issue of Egypt’s annual water deficit, with an emphasy to provide safe water access to the 7.3 million people currently deprived of it.
By providing technical support to governmental bodies, the initiative seeks to strengthen the infrastructure and capacity for delivering WASH services. The goal is to equip over 4,000 households with safe drinking water and sewage connections. This is in return will impact well-being of local families.
Improving WASH services in over 100 primary care units, with a focus on gender-separated and disability-friendly sanitation, reflects a commitment to inclusivity. The initiative recognizes the importance of education in building resilience against the impact of climate change. Plans to develop action plans and mitigation strategies in schools and nurseries are crucial for fostering awareness from an early age.
