Kenya launches phase two Othaya Sewerage Project

The government of Kenya led by country’s President William Ruto has launched the second phase of the Othaya Sewerage Project in Nyeri County.

This project, under the supervision of the Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA), aims to improve sanitation services for the local population. The phase launched involves completion of 7.8 km of sewer pipes in Othaya town, Nyeri County. The pipes have diameters ranging from 100 to 225 mm. The first phase of the project involved laying 3.2 km of sewer pipes.

The project also includes several other components including construction of a sanitary block at Lycée de Kagonye, rehabilitation of a second sanitary block, construction of a double bed for drying sewage sludge, construction of a sewer pipe in Kanyange, micro-tunnelling of tarmac roads in Othaya town.

The main goal of the project is to improve sanitation services for over 200,000 people in Othaya and the surrounding areas in Nyeri County. Approximately 26% of Nyeri’s population still lacks improved sanitation services.

The Kenyan government has been actively working on sanitation projects like the Othaya Sewerage Project with a target is to achieve 100% access to sanitation by the year 2030. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation.

Kenya currently faces challenges related to open defecation. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the country ranks 26th in the world with regards to the prevalence of open defecation. This highlights the need for comprehensive sanitation initiatives like the Othaya Sewerage Project to address these issues.
