Construction of Gwagwalada project in Nigeria begins

Construction of the Gwagwalada independent power plant (GIPP) in Nigeria. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inaugurated the groundbreaking to mark the start of works.

The Gwagwalada power plant will be a combined cycle gas-fired power plant, using General Electric GT13E2 turbines, heat recovery steam generators, steam turbine electric generators, direct air-cooling condensers, and black start diesel generators.

Sustainable energy

The project is a significant step towards addressing the country’s energy needs and utilizing its natural gas resources for power generation. It will be developed in phases by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). Each phase will comprise of three powertrain blocks.

The GIPP project will be built on a 547-hectare land in the capital city of Abuja. Phase one will have a capacity of 350MW. Each block will be powered by two General Electric GT13E2 turbines, two heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine electric generator, a direct air-cooling condenser and a black start diesel generator.

The China Machinery and Engineering Corporation, a part of the China National Machinery Industry Corporation, has been selected as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for the project.

Upon completion, the plant is expected to generate 10.3 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually. The electricity generated by the power plant will be sold under a power purchase agreement with the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading. It will then be supplied to distribution companies through long-term agreements and direct sales to major customers.
