The Gribo-Popoli hydroelectric power plant in Côte d’Ivoire have been commissioned. Project developers, POWERCHINA, announced the commissioning and said the plant is set to play a crucial role in strengthening Côte d’Ivoire’s economy, promoting regional energy cooperation, and enhancing POWERCHINA’s presence in Africa.
The power plant is situated downstream of the Soubre power station on the Sassandra River. It is the second project of this type carried out by POWERCHINA in the Sassandra river basin. The project which began in 2021 features an installed capacity of 112.9 MW and a storage capacity of 82 million cubic meters. It is 4.2 kilometers long and 18.58 meters high.
Mr. Noumory Sidibe, General Manager of the project owner said since the project’s inception the teams have navigated numerous technical and logistical challenges to complete the installation ahead of schedule and the commissioning follows a successful 72-hour test phase.

Energy balance
The completion of the Gribo-Popoli project is crucial for Côte d’Ivoire’s energy balance. By boosting the country’s power generation capacity, the new plant will help stabilize energy supplies, reducing the risk of power cuts that can hinder economic growth. Additionally, surplus electricity generated by the plant can be exported to neighboring countries, enhancing Côte d’Ivoire’s position as a key energy supplier in West Africa.
The Gribo-Popoli hydroelectric power station has significant economic implications for Côte d’Ivoire. By generating surplus electricity, the country will not only meet its domestic demand but also export energy to neighboring countries, creating additional revenue. This increase in power generation capacity will also attract new industrial investment, fostering local economic development.
