Invictus receives green light for Cabora Bassa Project in Zimbabwe

Invictus Energy Ltd. has obtained approval from the Zimbabwe Environmental Management Agency (EMA) for the Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to begin pilot production at its Cabora Bassa Project in Zimbabwe.

The Cabora Bassa Project in Zimbabwe is an oil and gas exploration project located in the northern part of the country, near the border with Mozambique, primarily focused on developing natural gas reserves within the Cabora Bassa Basin. The project holds significant potential to address Zimbabwe’s energy needs by providing a substantial source of natural gas for power generation and potentially export to neighboring countries.

Commercializing gas

The project involves gas extraction, liquefaction, and transport from the Mukuyu gas field, along with the Eureka Gold Mine gas-to-power project. Invictus holds an 80% operating interest in the project, which is located in the Muzarabani district of Mashonaland Central Province.

The ESIA approval clears the path for commercializing gas resources from the Cabora Bassa Basin. Invictus is now focused on finalizing pilot production plans, securing the necessary permits, and advancing discussions with potential offtake partners. The company renewed its SG 4571 license, which includes the Mukuyu Discovery, for another three years in January 2025.

The Eureka Gold Mine gas-to-power project is being developed in partnership with Dallaglio (owner of Eureka Mine) and Himoinsa SA (responsible for onsite power generation). Early feasibility studies suggest a gas price exceeding $10 per gigajoule (GJ) for gas-fired power generation, indicating the project’s strong economic potential. The ESIA expands on a 2019 assessment, which included comprehensive environmental, archaeological, and socioeconomic studies.
