Kenya inks green manufacturing deals

Kenya has signed green manufacturing agreements totaling US $4.48bn. This happened during launch of AGII that was presided over by President William Ruto and involved collaboration with the COP28 Presidency (UAE) and other African nations.

The funds will be allocated to various green manufacturing projects across the country, marking a new era of sustainable development. They include a US $1.5bn deal from a partnership of Kenya with Australian firm Fortescue for green fertilizer production project. The project aims to generate green ammonia, contributing to environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

Clean energy boost

Kenya also signed a US $1bn agreement with Indonesia and Masdar for a 300MW geothermal project in Suswa. Globeleq pledged USD 110 million for the development of a 35MW geothermal project in Menengai. The Geothermal Development Corporation and AMEA Power collaborated on a US $800M, 200MW Paka Geothermal project.

The East African country along with the United States, Brazil, and India, also launched a Clean Energy Supply Chain expansion initiative. The initiative is supported by a US $568m loan designed to bolster clean energy infrastructure in developing countries. United Green and Kenya Development Corporation on the other hand sealed a partnership for a vast 15,000-hectare sustainable agriculture project.

These initiatives demonstrate Kenya’s dedication to embracing green technologies, sustainable energy sources, and environmentally friendly practices, contributing to global efforts in combating climate change.
