Mozambique inaugurates water system in Muanza

Anita Anyango

The government of Mozambique through the Head of State, Daniel Chapo has inaugurated a newly constructed water supply system in Muanza district, Sofala province, in a project valued at 50 million meticais (about $782,000).

The facility, developed under the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (PRONASAR), is set to provide clean water to approximately 7,000 residents in its initial phase. Authorities estimate the number of beneficiaries could rise to 17,000 in the medium term as the network expands.

Addressing residents during the launch ceremony, Chapo said the project reflects the government’s continued focus on extending essential services to rural communities and reducing inequalities between urban and remote areas.

He noted that improved access to safe water is fundamental to strengthening public health, supporting economic activity and building resilient communities. “These figures represent lives that will be transformed and opportunities that will now become attainable,” he said.

The infrastructure includes a 150-cubic-metre ground reservoir and a 75-cubic-metre elevated tank. Water will be distributed through several public standpipes as well as 50 household connections installed in the first phase. For years, Muanza’s population depended largely on mechanical boreholes, which often proved insufficient to meet demand. Officials said the new system is designed to improve reliability while accommodating future population growth.

Chapo urged local residents to safeguard the installation, describing it as a shared public asset. He added that investments in water infrastructure also help communities cope with climate-related shocks and natural disasters. The project forms part of Mozambique’s broader goal of achieving universal access to safe water in rural areas by 2030, with PRONASAR serving as a key vehicle for expanding coverage and improving living standards nationwide.
