OTEC, the digital technology subsidiary of Oman’s Omantel, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Algeria’s Water and Sanitation Company (SEAAL) to pilot an automated water metering system, strengthening the company’s regional digital expansion and supporting the modernization of utility services.
The agreement will be implemented through Tadum, an OTEC subsidiary, in partnership with Nama Water Services. Under the project, the partners will deploy an Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) using LoRaWAN wireless technology to enable remote monitoring of water consumption.

Objective
The pilot aims to improve the efficiency of water management by replacing conventional meter reading processes with automated data collection. The new system is expected to provide utilities with more accurate and timely consumption information, helping streamline billing, reduce operational costs and improve the overall management of water resources.
The MoU was signed during the visit of an official Omani delegation to Algeria led by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, highlighting growing cooperation between the two countries in digital innovation and smart infrastructure development. Omantel said the initiative supports its strategy of expanding digital transformation services into regional markets through OTEC and its subsidiaries. The company is seeking to leverage its expertise in smart technologies to help utilities modernize their operations while creating new business opportunities across North Africa and the wider Middle East.
The collaboration also reflects the increasing adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions within the utilities sector, where smart metering technologies are being used to improve operational efficiency, enhance service delivery and support more sustainable management of essential resources. If the pilot proves successful, it could lay the foundation for broader deployment of advanced water metering systems across Algeria.
