Wilo East Africa Commissions 80 Smart Pumps at Kenya-AIST

Wilo East Africa has successfully supplied and commissioned nearly 80 high-efficiency pumps and pump control systems for the newly developed Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kenya-AIST), situated within Konza Technopolis, Kenya’s flagship smart city project under Vision 2030.

The installed pump systems serve critical functions across HVAC, water boosting, firefighting, drainage and sewage, and irrigation applications, ensuring efficient and reliable water management within this prestigious academic and research institution.

Kenya-AIST, modeled after the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), is strategically designed to produce the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. The institution occupies 36 acres within Konza Technopolis and includes modern laboratories, research centers, student housing, and sports infrastructure.

This major infrastructure deployment marks a significant milestone in Wilo’s involvement in East Africa’s transition toward sustainable, smart urban infrastructure. It follows the company’s earlier success in 2023, where it supplied intelligent pumping systems to the Konza National Data Center, which serves as the city’s digital backbone, supporting cloud services, e-governance, and secure data hosting.

A Smart City Built on Smart Water Infrastructure
Konza Technopolis, often referred to as the “Silicon Valley of East Africa,” is a 5,000-acre technology-driven urban development located 64 kilometers south of Nairobi. As a key component of Kenya’s Vision 2030 economic transformation blueprint, the city is envisioned as a catalyst for innovation and industrial growth.

Within this smart city context, Wilo’s pump technologies offer intelligent, connected solutions that address the unique demands of high-performance urban systems. By optimizing energy use, enhancing system automation, and improving long-term maintenance planning, Wilo’s solutions are helping Konza lay the foundation for a resilient and efficient future.

“We are proud to be part of Kenya’s journey toward a smart and sustainable future,” said Belete A. Matebe, Managing Director of Wilo East Africa. “Our work at Kenya-AIST and the Konza Data Center demonstrates our commitment to delivering energy-efficient, smart pumping technologies that meet the evolving needs of modern cities across the region.”

Efficiency, Connectivity, and Sustainability at the Core
The newly commissioned pumps at Kenya-AIST integrate Wilo’s core engineering values:

  • Energy Efficiency: The systems incorporate high-efficiency motors and intelligent controls that significantly reduce electricity consumption
  • Smart Control Systems: Integrated pump monitoring and control interfaces allow for real-time performance tracking and diagnostics.
  • Water Management Optimization: Designed to reduce water losses and enhance system reliability across the institution’s multiple use points.
  • Resilient Infrastructure: Capable of supporting heavy-duty applications, from emergency firefighting to precision irrigation in research fields.

These features are especially critical in large-scale developments such as Konza, where water and energy efficiency, digital integration, and reliability are central to long-term operational sustainability.

Supporting Kenya’s Vision 2030 and SDG Goals
Wilo’s work aligns with broader national and global goals, including Kenya’s Vision 2030, which prioritizes infrastructure, innovation, and sustainability. Moreover, the installations contribute directly to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

By supplying solutions that integrate data-driven optimization and modular design, Wilo continues to be a driving force behind modernizing Africa’s urban infrastructure through intelligent pump systems.

Looking Ahead
As Konza Technopolis evolves, so too will the infrastructure needed to support it. Wilo East Africa has positioned itself as a reliable, innovative partner in this transformation. The company remains committed to working with local governments, developers, and institutions to deliver pumping solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also adaptable to the unique needs of East African environments.
